Notes from The Second Grade:

Hello and welcome back. All of us in the second grade hope you Holiday was restful.  As we get geared up and ready to undertake the remainder of the year, it is important that we help children to re-establish strong patterns that will aid them in being successful at school.  As we observed them this first week, we have had many conversations around their fatigue and the number of clinic referrals for headaches and general malaise.  We attribute this to them being tired and not getting enough rest to persevere through a long school day. Also, in conversations with them, we discussed their excitement over their new video games and consoles, which seem to be consuming a good deal of their interest and time.  It is critical that young children, especially males, have some help in monitoring and setting limits with these devices and time, at home, is also dedicated to pre-academic activities.  In fact, recent research from cited in Psychology Today, indicates that addiction to video games may have many long-range implications on: attention span, violent behavior, and pro-social behavior.  Of course, we are not advocating the elimination of video games from children’s lives, just helping them to set limits and ensure they live well-rounded lives outside of the classroom.

Across the Curriculum:

Second graders will continue their trek through addition and subtraction.  Our goal: to be able to group and ungroup numbers up to 1000.  We will continue to provide instruction and practice until late in February when we will take a respite and explore money and measurement.  In reading, we are endeavoring to learn the importance of vocabulary as we tackle non-fiction texts.  Additionally, second graders are using details to support their thinking on main idea and summarizing important components of the text.  As we begin the process of wrapping up maps and biomes, we will transition into a study of weather and weather patterns across the globe.

Please note that we will be having conferences on Feb. 20th and 22nd.  Generally, our book fair runs at the same time.  While you are  here for conferences, make sure to take a few moments and check out all the goodies in the library.
